Somerset Youth Parliament
We recently attended the local Somerset Youth parliament meeting.
The Somerset Youth Parliament, is a group of representatives made up of young people who meet regularly to give young people ages 10-25 an active voice in local politics.
The most recent meeting took place on Sunday 7th July and was attended by Darcey Warren, the OPCCs Communications and Youth Engagement Apprentice.
The group has three Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs) and they are elected locally by other young people. They have recently set out their new campaigns for their two-year term, which are:
- Young People and Social Media
- Young People – Strong, Healthy Lives
- Young People and the Fragile Environment
The focus of the meeting was on recent community events they had attended, like Children’s Parliament Day, as well as campaign planning.
Darcey said:
“I had the opportunity to attend the Somerset Youth parliaments July meeting. These meetings bring young people together to collaborate, talk and be the representative voice for other young people in the area.
“It was great to be invited to talk to them about the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s role and answer their questions.”
The young people gave positive feedback and emphasised how much they enjoyed their day, you can read their own blogs about it here.
